Duties
Penitentiary Department is a sub-department of the Ministry of Corrections and Legal Assistance. The Structure of Department includes the Central Apparatus and penitentiary establishments. According to the law, the penitentiary establishments may be of different types, in particular:
· Establishments for pre-trial inmates;
· Penitentiary establishments – closed-type, semi-open type, special women and juveniles establishments;
· Medical establishments.
Currently, penitentiary system includes 17 different types of penitentiary establishments, among others 2 medical establishments, a correctional establishment for juveniles and a women's special establishment. The majority of the institutions are mixed–type establishments that are located in different regions of Georgia. The majority of the establishments (13) are located in East Georgia, while 4 establishments are located in West Georgia.
The main function of the Penitentiary Department is an execution of imprisonment sentences.
